David De Gea

By Ojwango Mwai

Manchester United manager sir Alex Ferguson has high hopes in his under-fire goalkeeper ahead of a tough English Premier League match against Chelsea. The manager openly expressed his backing for the error prone goalkeeper stating that he will deliver and be successful in his football career. His sentiments came just a day before the eagerly awaited English Premier League encounter on Sunday. The Manchester United number one goalkeeper, David De Gea has been under-fire for making series of mistakes since joining the Red Devils. The English Premier League champion has since been losing matches due to unending mistakes made by their goalkeeper.

The 21 years old David De Gea joined Red Devils last summer from Atletico Madrid for a £18.9 transfer fee. David De Gea joined Old Trafford as Sir Alex Ferguson’s preferred goalkeeper but his campaign has been full of disappointments. Since joining the Red Devils, the Spanish goalkeeper has been criticized for making high profile errors that costed the team dearly. Just recently in the FA cup tie, the Spaniard goalkeeper lead Manchester United to a disappointing outing at Anfield when they slipped to a 2-1 lost against Liverpool. Manchester United was subsequently eliminated from the FA Cup competition.

Despite his disappointing campaign, Sir Alex Ferguson still believes in his number one Spanish keeper.  He is therefore expected to be retained in the starting XI for Manchester United squad to face Chelsea this weekend in English Premier League at Stamford Bridge. He is set to make a major comeback after missing United’s match against stoke City due to illness. It is high expected that David De Gea will extend his campaign for Manchester United given that his assistant Anders Lindegaard has been ruled out for four weeks due to recent ankle injury.

John Terry

By Trevor Leach

John Terry has been stripped off England captaincy by Football Association. The move followed the racism allegation that the England and Chelsea defender is facing. It is the second time in his football career that defender John Terry is being stripped off the England captaincy band. The FA chairman, David Bernstrein called John Terry this morning to inform him of the FA’s decision to strip him off the England captaincy. It is a big blow to the England manager Fabio Capello as his team prepares for the Euro 2012. Fabio Capello highly trusted John Terry to lead England in the Euro 2012 tournaments.

The England football governing body, FA made the decision to suspend John Terry from England captaincy following the allegations of racial abuse. The Chelsea defender cum captain was charged of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers’ defender Anton Ferdinand during their previous English premier league match last year. The England’s FA has been investigating the case and is yet to make its final verdict. John Terry is expected to stand trial on 9th July after the Euro 2012 tournament. This is the second time that John Terry is being stripped off England captaincy. The first time he was axed off the England captain armband followed an investigation into his alleged affair with Wayne Bridge’s ex-girlfriend.

The pending racism trial has thrown John Terry’s participation in Euro 2012 into major doubts. The defender may be barred from representing England in the competition given that the trial has been pushed till July 9th which is after Euro 2012. Terry on his part denied the allegation and was apparently not willing to voluntarily relinquish the armband. The FA board argued that John Terry should not be allowed to lead England in any major tournament while he has a very serious pending court case. He was subsequently axed off the England captaincy.

It was a highly entertaining and thrilling encounter at Reebok Stadium as the Gunners looked forward for a comeback to regain their grounds in the English premier title. On the other hand, Tottenham was strangely disjointed. They created very few chances.

Rafael van der Vaart was lucky to score the only and winning goal two minutes into the break. He scored a low goal that skidded past Watford goalkeeper Scott Loach. In the second half, there were little strikes by Tottenham Hotspurs. On the contrary, Watford display formidable performance marked with great energy and desire for victory. Tottenham Hotspurs manager, Harry Redknapp admitted his team struggled to come with a victory. Redknapp said he cannot explain how they won the match given their low and poor performance. All the glory goes to Rafael van der Vaart for his solitary gaol of the match.
